Modified Fibonacci
A common value set used for story sizes is the modified Fibonacci. The sequence goes 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20, 50, 100. Sometimes 0, ½, or ∞ are also used. Why are these values used? Well, saying that estimating is hard is an understatement. It’s easier to estimate things relative to other things. And this list uses increments of 1.5 to 2.5 times the previous size. If one story is 8 and another story is 13; it’s safe to say that the story of size 13 is about/almost twice as big, as the story that was sized 8.
Ideal Hours
Ideal hours is when you are working on ideal conditions, no interruptions, no meetings, no blockers, no need to understand someone else’s spaghetti code, and all the development goes smoothly with no hiccups. As we know, ideal hours don’t usually happen. On average, 1 ideal hour equals 2 normal, on the clock, hours. So if you estimate a task to be completed in 4 hours, on average it can be done in one day.
